HTC Unveils Exodus, a Blockchain-Powered Smartphone

HTC wants every one of its forthcoming Exodus smartphones to be a node on a blockchain network.

HTC Vive creator Phil Chen took the phase at the Consensus conference in New York Metropolis today to announce his return to the hardware maker, where he will lead its thou entrance into the blockchain and cryptocurrency space with the HTC Exodus.

The Exodus is a forthcoming Android smartphone project (release date TBD) that volition feature a universal cryptocurrency wallet, a "secure hardware enclave," and back up interoperability. The smartphone volition work with multiple blockchain protocols, Chen said.

The Exodus phone volition launch with back up for the Bitcoin, Lightning Network, Ethereum, and Dfinity networks, only more partnerships will be announced over the next few months to back up the entire blockchain ecosystem. The goal, he said, is "to help underlying protocols aggrandize their base of dedicated nodes."

After two years at Horizon Ventures, Chen returns to HTC every bit its new Decentralized Chief Officer heading upwardly blockchain and cryptocurrency initiatives. The Exodus is the first native blockchain phone defended to bringing end consumers decentralized awarding (DApp) experiences. HTC'southward goal is to build a device that will empower users to own their own identity and data, and keep it on their phones rather than in the cloud.

"I want to run into a world where the end consumers tin can truly own their information—browsing history, identity, assets, wallets, emails, messaging—without the need for central authorities," said Chen. "In that location is a lot of work ahead of us, but I believe the mobile hardware layer tin can contribute significantly to our new decentralized globe."

Chen didn't give a toll signal for the HTC Exodus, but said HTC may accept cryptocurrency as a course of payment when information technology'due south available. Users tin can reserve a smartphone on the Exodus website.
