Merriam-Webster on Tuesday announced it has added more than 840 new words to the dictionary, including the popular net slang TL;DR and a few other tech terms similar aeroplane mode, bingeable, biohacking, fintech, force quit, haptics, and Instagramming.

The first known utilize of TL;DR was in 2002, according to Merriam-Webster. Sixteen years later, the abbreviation for "too long; didn't read" is now officially office of the dictionary.

Merriam-Webster on Tuesday announced it has added more than 840 new words to the dictionary, including the aforementioned internet slang and a few other tech terms like airplane fashion, bingeable, biohacking, fintech, force quit, haptics, and Instagramming. So, the next time y'all say "TL;DR" to dismiss a lengthy text, and some non-internet savvy person asks what language you're speaking, you tin can confidently say "English language" and direct them to Merriam-Webster.

"Unsurprisingly, words from digital technology are an important part of the new listing," the folks at Merriam-Webster wrote in a blog mail. "Also unsurprisingly, the evolution of our applied science is expressed in these terms: we are no longer naming our devices and programs, we're talking about what we do with them, and what they do for us."

The list of newly-official words too includes non-tech additions such as: adorbs, avo, bougie, fav, Generation Z, guac, hangry, hophead, Latinx (a "gender-neutral alternative to Latina and Latino"), marg (brusk for margarita), mocktail, rando, time suck, and zoodles (zucchini noodles).

"New words are added to the dictionary merely when they accept already been used past many people—often initially by specialists or subcultures," Merriam-Webster wrote. "And so, gradually, a word's use spreads to the rest of u.s.."

Meanwhile, other tech words added to dictionaries in recent years include clickbait, hashtag, phablet, selfie, and tweet. Back in 2022, Oxford Lexicon'south Word of the Year was emoji.
